Gurez, in the local tongue, means a valley hidden deep in the high Himalayas. Rather true to its name it has remained so for ages. Home to the Dardic folk of the ancient Gilgit, Gurez was once Kashmir’s gateway to the famous Silk Route. Unfortunately today though, the Line of Control cuts through the valley. Barbed wire fences and army posts dot its landscape, but that has in no way taken away any of its rustic charm. It remains one of the few places with its soul still rooted in the old ways of life. Here’s a glimpse into that intriguing world.
